Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced Michigan's first Executive Order to address coronavirus, which became effective on March 24. Since then, all citizens have been asked to “Stay Home, Stay Safe” and all Michigan businesses and operations temporarily suspended in-person operations.

On May 21, 2020, Governor Whitmer again extended her "Stay Home, Stay Safe" Executive Order and Delta College will now remain closed through Friday, June 12.

Individuals may only leave their home or place of residence under very limited circumstances, and they must adhere to social distancing measures recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention when they do so, including remaining at least six feet from people from outside the individual’s household to the extent feasible under the circumstances.

All events scheduled to be held on Delta College's main campus and centers have been canceled through June 12, 2020. In addition, several Delta College ceremonies and large events that were originally planned in the coming months will be postponed, including commencement.

This does not affect the ability of students to complete graduation requirements and receive their degrees. Each student who completes their degree requirements will receive their degree based on the month requested on their graduation application. Governor Gretchen Whitmer's “Stay Home, Stay Safe” Executive Order (EO 2020-21), directing all Michigan businesses and operations to temporarily suspend in-person operations that are not necessary to sustain or protect life, was effective at 12:01am on March 24 and will remain for at least three weeks. The order directs Michiganders to stay in their homes unless they’re a part of that critical infrastructure workforce, engaged in an outdoor activity, or performing tasks necessary to the health and safety of themselves or their family, like going to the hospital or grocery store.

Monday, April 6, Governor Whitmer held a press conference with health updates. Another Executive Order is anticipated for later this week that would keep Delta from reopening on Tuesday, April 14, as hoped when we closed three weeks ago. Therefore, Delta College will remain closed through Friday, May 1.

Delta College has decided that the remainder of the winter 2020 semester will continue to be delivered via distance/online learning. The decision is effective March 27 and will take us through May 1, 2020. We hope making this decision will provide stability in your learning environment for the rest of the winter semester.  

We are working with faculty coordinators in the career programs on how best to meet educational needs that require clinicals, access to labs or other necessary hands on instruction. If conditions change enough to allow a lifting of the emergency order later in April, then we will address these outstanding issues on campus, but remain online for all other instructional delivery.  

We are working on a clear set of guidelines for course withdrawals, drops and incompletes, in case you may need them in the weeks ahead. More specific language on those options is being developed right now and will be posted here later next week.

Thank you for your patience as we work through our educational process. This is a semester like no other and we are uncertain how things will end. However, you are not alone.  Even though the College buildings remain closed at this time, feel free to reach out to a member of the Student and Educational Services team (i.e. tutoring, counseling, advising, etc.), who can offer assistance by phone or through a zoom meeting.

Delta College will be in compliance with this order, which means that after today, only essential services will be offered on campus (i.e. public safety, public broadcasting, etc.). This situation will start tonight, Monday, March 24 at 12:01am (midnight, Monday night/Tuesday morning) and it remain in place until the executive is lifted, which at this time is through Monday, April 13 at 11:59pm (midnight, Monday night/Tuesday morning). 

There is again some breaking news relating to the coronavirus issue here in Michigan. Governor Whitmer has ordered closures for the health of the general public. Due to the changing nature of the issue, Delta College has made the decision to close its buildings to the general public, effective Monday, March 16. This includes main campus, as well as all three of our centers.

Delta College will continue to transition classes to distance/online delivery, beginning on Wednesday, March 18 and courses will then continue in that manner until Friday, April 10. All previously online courses should be continuing as previously scheduled.

The College will not offer laboratories, skilled trades, clinicals, and studio performance opportunities at this time, as it is no longer feasible. Laboratories, the library, testing center, tutoring center and computer labs are now closed to students and the general public. Faculty are being encouraged to seek alternative learning opportunities and those will be announced over the next few days.

If you are a student who is unfamiliar or uncomfortable working online, our eLearning team has created a video to walk you through the various aspects of the D2L (Desire 2 Learn) environment. The college is developing a plan for online tutoring services.

The college continues to evaluate the situation and explore possible solutions. More information will be shared as available. Please watch your Delta email for updates. We appreciate the patience and flexibility exhibited by students, faculty and staff and ask for continued understanding as we navigate through this unusual and ever-changing situation.

Delta College distance learning continues. Closes buildings to the public.

 

Delta College will be closing to the public effective Monday, March 16, at 3pm and will remain closed through Friday, April 10. This includes its pool and fitness facility, all events, LLIC and all other public services. We will continually monitor and evaluate conditions for reopening based on further recommendations from federal, state and local officials.

 

Distance learning will continue. Further information for students and staff will be sent as it becomes available. We appreciate the patience and flexibility exhibited by students, faculty and staff to date and ask for continued understanding as we navigate through this unprecedented and ever-changing situation.

Health program clinical placements  (including dental assisting, dental hygiene, nursing, physical therapist assistant, respiratory therapy, sonography, radiography, surgical technology, surgical first assistant and sterile processing)

• Beginning Monday, March 16 at 12:01am, Delta is temporarily suspending all health clinical rotations  until at least until Sunday, April 5 at 5pm. This change is due to an emergency order put in place by Governor Whitmer for temporary restrictions on entry into health care facilities, residential care facilities, congregate care facilities and juvenile justice facilities. 
• Each faculty member will be informing students of these changes and how to proceed in your curriculum. The college will contact your health facilities and inform them of Delta's temporary suspension of your clinical rotation. 
• We are hopeful that clinicals will resume in the future upon approval by the Governor and each health care facility. Some local health systems have communicated that it would be appreciated if students in paid externships/internships continue to report to work. Again, check with your faculty member to be sure.

Other laboratories and studio/performance  (including science, trades and manufacturing, music and other areas)

• At this time, all laboratory experiences in the trades and manufacturing such as CNC, chemical processing, welding, automotive, residential construction, skilled trades and other areas of Delta College are continuing as normal.
• This includes meeting on Monday and Tuesday, March 16 and March 17, even though face-to-face class sessions have been suspended. 
• We are shifting as much content online as we can but are still meeting, sometimes in smaller groups, to cover the hands-on content we have no way of duplicating online. Contact your faculty member if you have further questions.

For those course objectives that require physical presence, please remember to follow the guidelines for reducing disease transmission:

• Encourage and practice frequent hand washing; when appropriate use gloves.
• Maintain social distancing by having students work six feet apart. 

 Please minimize the time spent in a group setting as much as possible.

• Do not require all students to stay until the last student is done.
• If students can demonstrate the competency with little or no practice, allow them to do so and then leave.
• If students have attained course mastery, it is appropriate to exempt them from any remaining “lab” sessions.

Faculty members in the instructional areas are communicating with each program's accrediting body to develop alternative ways to meet clinical outcomes and objectives. Changes in this regard will be communicated to students within each program.  

We are actively identifying alternate ways of meetings course outcomes prior to the end of the winter semester, or in case Delta College’s buildings are closed completely through a future Governor’s order.  These changes would also be communicated at the time any future changes are made.

These are challenging times and the circumstances are changing hour by hour. We can, however, assure you that we will get you through the full learning cycle of your courses so that you are prepared for your state licensing examinations. 

 

The Delta College Planetarium will cancel all shows from today through Sunday, March 29. The Bay County Health Department has strongly encouraged that public meetings in the community over 100 people be canceled or rescheduled for a later date. This is intended to protect seniors and individuals with chronic conditions, as well as the general public. Decisions regarding the resumption of a normal schedule will be made and announced at a later date. Those with questions about advance tickets that were purchased, should call the Planetarium at 989-667-2260.

The best way to prevent illness is to avoid being exposed to this virus. 

• The virus is thought to spread mainly from person-to-person.
• Between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet).
  Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.
  These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs.

Precautions

The CDC has indicated that “the immediate risk of this new virus to the American public is believed to be low at this time, however everyone can do their part to help us respond to this emerging public health threat.” Keep in mind the simple precautions that have been recommended by CDC:

• It’s currently flu and respiratory disease season and CDC recommends getting a flu vaccine, taking everyday preventive actions to help stop the spread of germs, and taking flu antivirals if prescribed.
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
• If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
• Stay home when you are sick.
• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

The College is committed to taking all measures necessary to respond to this public health issue, as the situation requires. The leadership team is closely monitoring and planning in light of this developing situation and has been working with the Bay County Health Department. We are also following the procedures and updates from the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention).

Events & Services

On March 11, Governor Gretchen Whitmer recommended that all gatherings that would include 100 or more people be suspended or canceled, out of an abundance of caution.

For that reason, Delta College will be canceling the Middle School Math Competition, scheduled for Saturday, March 14.

Decisions about future events on campus will be considered and further decisions announced.

Precautions

The CDC has indicated that “the immediate risk of this new virus to the American public is believed to be low at this time, however everyone can do their part to help us respond to this emerging public health threat.” Keep in mind the simple precautions that have been recommended by CDC:

• It’s currently flu and respiratory disease season and CDC recommends getting a flu vaccine, taking everyday preventive actions to help stop the spread of germs, and taking flu antivirals if prescribed.
• Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
• If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.
• Stay home when you are sick.
• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

Good afternoon, 

I hope this message finds you well and that you are looking forward to next week’s spring break.  I’m sure you all are aware of recent reports about the worldwide Coronavirus (Covid-19) situation and its impact on so many countries.  Although we have not faced the health issue here in the Great Lakes Bay Region, or even within Michigan, I wanted you to know that we are keeping track of the last information. The College is prepared, in case anything changes in the days or weeks ahead.  While we presume the preparation will be unneeded, we are ready should the situation warrant greater attention.

The health and safety of our campus community is our highest priority. The College will be purchasing and distributing additional hand sanitizers and disinfectant wipes, in order to assist students, staff and visitors through the flu and cold season.  For those who will be traveling over the upcoming spring break, take care.  And to all, stay safe and healthy throughout this winter semester.
