how it works

Scholarships are dollars for your education that you don't have to pay back! Some are based on financial need, but many others are based upon your career track or goals. Delta College accepts applications only once a year.

What's the deadline to apply for scholarships?

Delta College  accepts applications once a year for the following academic year. Scholarship applications are accepted from December – February for the following fall and winter semesters.

The application timeframe for 2025-2026 scholarships is December 3, 2024 through February 4, 2025.

What special information do I need before applying?

All students must have a Delta College Student ID number and a password to apply for scholarships. To get your student ID number, visit the Admissions Office page and apply to be accepted as a Delta College student.

Once you have your student ID number, you will be considered a Current Student.  Take the next steps to get your password by visiting the Electronic Account Sign up page.  You will need your last four digits of your social security number, along with your student ID number, to create your password.

 How do I apply?

You will log into the AcademicWorks Scholarship Application by using your Delta College username and password.  Be sure you have all of the information you'll need to have handy, such as your student ID number, then log into the online application form.  You'll need to be ready to answer the questions and write your essays.  But don't worry, you can start your application, then come back later to complete the process.

 Who can apply?

All current and future Delta College students can apply. You must be either a high school graduate or have earned a GED. High School students who will be dual-enrolled during the scholarship award period are not eligible for these scholarships.

Special instructions for high school students

If you are a high school senior, you must still have a Delta College ID number and a password to apply for our scholarships. For any students who graduated from high school in the past three years, but have no Delta College grade point average (GPA), we will need you to upload your high school transcript to your application by the deadline date.

Why do you need my transcript?

Many of the Delta College scholarships have a requirement of a minimum grade point average (GPA). If you haven't attended before, we need another way to help you confirm that you qualify.  Having a high school transcript meets that goal.

How  will I know If I receive a scholarship?

All information related to your Delta College scholarship application will be emailed to you letting you know if you did or did not receive a scholarship. It is important that you add the email above to your list of trusted domains so our emails to you don't end up in your "junk" folder. Your Delta College email address is what we will use to communicate with you regarding the status of your scholarship.

When  will I know if I receive a scholarship?

The first round of scholarship awards will be emailed on Monday, April 7, 2025. If some dollars remain, a second round of scholarship awards will be sent on Monday, April 21, 2025. You will receive word – either an offer or our regrets – by Friday, May 9, 2025 via email.

Requirements to confirm your scholarship

There are three critical steps you must take after you are offered a scholarship:

  1. You must formally accept the scholarship by Thursday, April 17, 2025.  In the email you receive offering you the scholarship, you will be asked to take this step.  If you do not respond and confirm acceptance by this date, the dollars will be offered to another deserving student who also applied to attend Delta College.
  2. You must upload a thank you letter to your online application by Friday, May 9, 2025.
  3. You will also receive an email in late May or early June from Financial Aid notifying you that your scholarship award has posted to your Student Account. Please watch for this email as it will give instructions on how you can review and accept your offer on your Student Account.

Failure to complete these vital steps is likely to lead to you losing the opportunity to access these scholarship dollars for attending Delta College.

To begin the application process, log into the AcademicWorks scholarship application using your Delta username and password.

Hints for Success

Writing your essay

We recommend that you type your answers in Microsoft Word and be sure to use spell check and grammar check when you are done.  Word will also let you check the word count of your essays.  It's important that you take these steps, since scoring for how well you will rank in the process depends upon these factors.

Once you are done, you can copy and paste your answers into the online application.

Can I get help with my essay?

Many students find it helpful to read their essays aloud to see how it sounds.  Are your thoughts complete?  You may also consider having a friend or relative read what you've written and then offer their opinions on how clear your thoughts are reflected.

Also, Delta College's WRIT Center can assist you with your essay writing. It is located in the Library Learning Information Center (LLIC).  Students are assisted on a first come, first serve basis.  While no appointments are needed, you should call ahead at 989-686-9086 to ask about their hours. Or, visit WRIT Center.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much money are scholarship awards?

Although there are a few exceptions, most scholarships will be for $1,000 total ($500 for Fall and $500 for Winter).

More specifically, each semester's award will be applied to your student account based upon your enrollment status:

  • $500 if you are enrolled in 12 credits or more
  • $375 if you are enrolled in 6–11 credits
  • No scholarship if you are enrolled in 5 credits or less
How will I receive my scholarship dollars?

The dollars will be added to your student account at Delta College and will not be sent directly to you. If you log into your Student Self Service account, you will be able to check the financial award letter, and it will list the scholarship name and the amount received.

Is a certain grade point average (GPA) needed to qualify for a scholarship?

When you complete your online application, the scholarship software AcademicWorks will determine what scholarships you may qualify for, based on the answers you give. Some scholarships require a certain GPA and some do not.

Do I have to complete a FAFSA to qualify for a scholarship?

Some scholarships require that the FAFSA be completed, but many do not require it. But, it's a great idea to apply to pursue every possible funding opportunity you can.

How does Delta College decide if a student gets a scholarship?

We look at a number of factors and encourage you to focus on them before you finalize your application.  There are two essay questions to which you need to respond.

Once the process closes, all application essays are reviewed and scored by two or three faculty, staff or community volunteers.  Your answers to the two essay questions will be rated on the following factors:

  1. Content - how well did you respond to the question
  2. Spelling and grammar
  3. Whether you met the requirement of writing a minimum of 150 words but not more than 250 words for each essay answer

All applicants then are ranked according to their cumulative score.  Delta College staff members will then award dollars beginning at the top of the ranked listing, and work our way down the list until the dollars are fully given away.

"As I work toward completing my education at Delta College, I am very thankful for receiving your thoughtful gift. This is my first scholarship ever , and because of that, I am more inspired and confident in my life."
