Job Experience

Hiring students through paid internships and cooperative education programs can develop your talent pipeline and give you access to highly-skilled workers at lower wages. Work-based learning benefits students, businesses and the community. Any business – no matter how large or small – can benefit from engaging students in these types of learning opportunities. Work-based learning comes in a variety of forms and can be short or long-term in nature. Plus, you get to know the individual, and their work ethic, before making a long-term hiring commitment.

Why should employers consider building a robust internship and/or co-op program?

  • Recruitment: Interns can be a valuable source of new talent and highly motivated pre-professionals for your organization and a proven, cost-effective way to recruit and evaluate potential employees.
  • Increased productivity: Interns can bring fresh ideas from the classroom and new perspectives to your organization, which can lead to increased productivity and innovation.
  • Training and development: Interns can be valuable training and development resources. They can be trained in specific skills or areas of expertise needed within your organization and help existing employees develop management skill as intern supervisors.
  • Branding: Interns can help to promote your brand and attract new customers. By providing them with positive experiences, they can become advocates for your company and share their experiences with others. Also, students talk to other students and tell them if your organization was a positive experience or a negative experience.
  • Networking: Interns can also help to expand your professional network. By providing them with opportunities to meet and work with other professionals within your organization, you can create valuable connections for both the intern and your company.
  • Diversity and Inclusion: Employers should consider building a robust internship program that is inclusive of a diverse student population. This can foster a more diverse and inclusive workplace and attract top talent from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Alumni: Building a robust internship program can help to create a strong alumni network for your organization. This can be a valuable resource for future hiring and networking opportunities.

Community engagement: Building a robust internship program that engages with the community can help to foster positive relationships between your organization and the community. Your image in the community is enhanced as you contribute your expertise to the educational enterprise.

Co-op opportunities

This is a partnership between Delta College and local businesses. It provides the student with classroom learning and a hands-on learning experience with a business. Students are able to alternate their time between going to school and employment and are able to gain practical experience in their field of study.

Delta College co-ops require a one year commitment which typically begins in the Fall.

Currently, students are required to enroll in an academic course specific to the co-op experience.  A student must enroll in the course each semester they are working as a co-op and there is student homework associated with it. Employers are also required to participate by submitting evaluations and other engagement activities.

Internships

An internship is a short-term form of experiential learning that integrates knowledge and theory learned in the classroom with practical application and skills development in a professional workplace setting. Internships provide students the opportunity to gain valuable applied experience, develop social capital, explore career fields, and make connections in professional fields.

Delta College supports students who are engaged in experiential learning opportunities that offer clear supervision, work related to their career interests, and introduce them to networking, mentoring, and program and career related activities. Employers offering a quality paid internship program will find a strong candidate pool, as well as support, here at Delta College. The Workforce Experience office has created a guide to assist Delta’s Employer Partners navigating the internship process and providing structure, from the position’s inception to hiring and managing the students.
