Occupational Student Support Services

Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs are geared toward preparing students with necessary employability skills needed to thrive in the workforce by combining academic and career skills. Delta College is committed to increasing retention and graduation rates of students from Special Populations in State of Michigan approved CTE programs to support career readiness.

This work provides comprehensive, student focused services and support to promote equity, enhancement of the academic experience and increase employment opportunities for graduates.

Do I qualify?

This program assists occupational students in qualified programs, who meet at least one of the following eligibility criteria:

An adult learner who has limited ability in speaking, reading, writing, or understanding the English language
and;

    1. whose native language is a language other than English; or
    2. who lives in a family environment or community in which a language other than English is the dominant language.
    1. an individual who is a displaced homemaker, as defined in section 3 of the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (29 U.S.C. 3102); or
    2. an individual who;
      1. has worked primarily without remuneration to care for a home and family, and for that reason has diminished marketable skills; or
      2. is unemployed or underemployed and is experiencing difficulty in obtaining or upgrading employment
    1. In general, the term ‘individual with a disability’ means an individual with any disability (as defined in section 3 of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (42 U.S.C. 12102).
    2. The term ‘individuals with disabilities’ means more than 1 individual with a disability.
    1. An individual whose family income is at or below the national poverty level.
    2. An individual from an economically disadvantaged family, including foster children
    3. The individual or the individual’s family receives public assistance.

Nontraditional CTE programs prepare students for occupations or fields of work in which individuals from one gender comprise less than 25 percent of the individuals employed in those occupations or fields of work.

Unmarried; defined as:

    • legally separated from a spouse;
    • Has a minor child or children for which the parent has either custody or joint custody.

Individuals who lack a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence.

The term ‘foster care’ means:
24-hour substitute care for children placed away from their parents or
guardians and for whom the State agency has placement and care
responsibility. This includes, but is not limited to:

    • placements in foster family homes;
    • foster homes of relatives;
    • group homes,
    • emergency shelters;
    • residential facilities;
    • childcare institutions; and
    • pre-adoptive homes.

The term ‘age out’ refers to the time frame after which a foster care child is eligible for state services. Eligibility for state services varies depending on the state in which the child resides. Transitioning out of the child welfare system may occur as early as 18 or as late as age 23.

The term ‘armed forces’ means the:

    • Army;
    • Navy;
    • Air Force;
    • Marine Corps, and
    • Coastal Guard

The term ‘active duty’ means full-time duty in the active military service of the United States. Such
term includes full-time training duty, annual training duty, and attendance, while in the active military service, at a school designated as a service school by law or by the Secretary of the military department concerned. Such term does not include full-time National Guard duty. The term “active duty for a period of more than 30 days” means active duty under a call or order that does not specify a period of 30 days or less.

Occupation support program financial information

Occupational Support Program can provide additional financial assistance to students who have a great financial need. In order to considered for additional financial assistance, a student must have limited income, meet with CTE Success Coordinator and complete the form. 

Requirements to receive financial assistance

    • Must be enrolled in courses that are required for your occupational program
    • Have a 2.0 GPA or higher
    • Must have financial need after all grants or scholarships have been applied to your account
    • Complete this form by the deadline to have the best chance at financial assistance
    • Must meet with CTE Special Populations Engagement and Success Coordinator by phone, email or virtually.
